Software Performance & Green Software

Software decides how much hardware runs

Hardware consumes energy: while running, and already while being manufactured. But it is provisioned because of the software. If you want to cut emissions, software is where you start, not the data center.

  • Resource consumption per component or transaction instead of estimates
  • Performance and emissions from the same measurement
  • Open standards: OpenTelemetry, SCI, Cloud Carbon Footprint
How we measure it
How software causes CO₂-eq emissionsSoftware provisions hardware resources: compute, memory, network and storage. Running and manufacturing them consumes energy, which is what an application's CO₂-eq emissions come from. Measurement happens where software provisions resources; energy is then attributed from it through models and emission factors.Softwarearchitecture, code, load profilewe measure hereHardware resourceswe attribute hereEnergyin operation and in manufacturingCO₂-eq emissionsattributable to the application

Method

From measurement to a number you can defend

The energy consumption of an individual software component can rarely be measured directly. So we derive it from resource consumption, collected where it arises: inside the application.

  1. Collect

Resource consumption per component or transaction

We record compute, memory, network and storage use where it arises: per component or transaction, be it an API call, a batch run or a background job. Which instrumentation fits depends on your technology stack.

  2. Attribute

Turn consumption into energy and emissions

Established models derive energy from the measured consumption, which is combined with regional emission factors to produce CO₂-eq figures, following the Software Carbon Intensity defined in ISO/IEC 21031 and including the embodied energy of the hardware.

  3. Reduce

    Decisions that improve both

Less resource consumption means shorter response times, fewer instances and fewer emissions. Performance work and sustainability meet at the same lever.

Services

How we support you

Measuring the emissions of software

We record the resource consumption of your applications per component or transaction and convert it into energy and CO₂-eq figures you can rely on. They serve as a basis for reporting and for technical decisions.

Blue Angel certification

As an official auditor we guide you through certifying your software with the Blue Angel eco-label for resource-efficient software.

Performance Evaluation of Software Architectures

Find out early in the development cycle where architectural decisions limit the scalability of your application. The basis is measured data from your system, collected per component or transaction rather than estimated.

Continuous Performance Evaluation

Avoid unpleasant surprises by establishing continuous performance evaluation in your software development process. We integrate the required methods in your deployment pipelines and continuous integration systems.

Load and Performance Tests

Draw the right conclusions, even if you don’t have a test system that is comparable to your production environment. We support you through the execution and analysis of load and performance tests, and in carrying the results over to your production environment.

Capacity Planning and Management

Avoid unnecessary software and hardware investments as well as the risk of outages. Process changes, seasonal peak loads or cloud migrations act directly on performance and resource demand. We help you plan ahead.

Customers

What our customers say

RETIT integrated an automated performance analysis in our continuous delivery pipeline that helps us to continuously optimize response time, throughput and resource utilization of our product.

Thomas Bonnet, Head of Product Engineering, Loyalty Partner Solutions GmbH

RETIT has helped us to gain visibility into a mission critical Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and to improve its response time and user experience for its international end user group.

Jan Windhorst, Head of Operations Solutions, Group IT, PERI SE

RETIT has helped us to reduce memory utilization and response time of a business-critical application by up to 80%!

Questions

Some of the questions we have answered together with our customers

How can we …

  • … quantify the CO₂-eq emissions of individual software components or transactions, instead of estimating across the whole data center?
  • … determine an application’s energy consumption when we have no access to the hardware in the cloud?
  • … back up emission figures with measurements when customers or reporting obligations ask for them?
  • … attribute cost and emissions to the services, teams and users that cause them?
  • … see which services account for the largest share of cost and emissions?
  • … cut license and infrastructure costs by reducing capacity?
  • … reduce servers, CPU cores and instances without making response times worse?
  • … serve additional users without response times rising for everyone?
  • … improve the response times of the transactions our users feel every day?
